Council Working Session – Creating Best Practices for
Building a Strategic Family Communications Plan

Facilitated by Mariann Mihailidis, Family Office Exchange

This session will involve all Council members discussing how to improve communication with Family Members and how client’s can work on improving communication with the family office.

Goal:  To create best practices in family communication from the family office perspective and the family member (client) perspective.

To help prepare for the discussion, here are some questions to think about prior to the meeting from the family office perspective:

  • How much time should the family office spend on planning communication?
  • What are your goals for communication from the family office to your family members?
  • How far ahead should the family office be planning communication with family members?
  • Do your relationship managers have the ability to always understand the client’s point of view so they can effectively deliver the message?
  • Do you find yourself saying the same thing over and over?  When you are in that situation, how should you adjust your message so the client hears the message?
  • What do you do when you have the thought, “ I can’t believe what was not said?”
  • How often should you and your staff attend professional development courses in communication and listening?

Here are some questions to think about prior to the meeting from a family member (client) perspective:

  • What are my goals for communication with the family office?
  • How far ahead should I be planning communication with the family office? How do I communicate items I want to cover?
  • Do I have the ability to put myself on the other side of the table and understand what constraints and limitations the family office staff has in fulfilling my requests?  Are my requests reasonable?
  • Am I communicating my needs and concerns so they are heard and taken into consideration to come up with a solution?
  • What do I do when I think, “I can’t believe what was not said?”
  • Do I need to attend professional development courses in communication and listening?  Broader technical training?
