FOX Research on Strengthening the Partnership between Families and Advisors

Presented by Sara Hamilton, Founder and CEO, Family Office Exchange

Sara will share the final report on the 2016 FOX Thought Leaders Summit on Strengthening the Partnership between Families and their Advisors for discussion purposes.  FOX learned that by strategic partnering, families are better positioned to operate in an increasingly complex and unpredictable global environment.  Partnerships optimize family and advisor relationships.

During the session the Council will engage the group in a dialogue about:

  • Why families should build a “Partnership Culture” and how they operate within a family/advisor ecosystem
  • Steps families can take to strengthen their present and future partnerships
  • How GFEC members view partnerships and participant ideas on how these partnerships might be improved

Operating in an Era of Distrust

Andrew Hunt of Hunt Economics Ltd.

Andrew is joining the council again to bring the GFEC a world view, with a focus on the changed political environment in the UK and the US (other countries seem to be considering protectionist views as well).  Regionalism and populism may be profound as risk premiums rise, global institutions lose trust and technology innovations change the way things work.  This confluence of emerging trends must be understood so that GFEC members can position the complex moving parts of your family enterprise to remain at the leading edge.

Disruptions in the Investment Industry and the Future of Alpha

Presented by Kristi Kuechler,
President of the Private Investor Center at FOX

Kristi will identify trends that are changing the future of the investment industry and the way investors access investment products.  The discussion will focus on the future of alpha and how sophisticated investors are adapting as they continue to seek outsized returns for their families.

Some of the trends discussed will include the following:

1)    The commoditization of long only equity: the decline of active management and the rise of passive and factor-based investment strategies.

2)    Rethinking asset class allocation: how should factor-based investment strategies be considered, if at all, and how should tactical opportunities or market environments be incorporated into portfolio construction?

3)    Reassessment of hedge funds in the face of industry-wide weak returns.  Whether generating “alpha” or volatility reduction, are hedge funds delivering, particularly after fees and taxes?

4)    Reconsidering private equity - funds and direct investments - as investors seek the coveted illiquidity premium in the pursuit of double digit returns.
