Case Study:  Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast – One Office’s Journey

In July of 2016, the leadership team of a family office met for their first retreat under new CEO.  The single most important work the team needed to achieve was to optimize how the family office worked, starting with culture – because culture and the collective impact of our all individual behaviors – will trump any strategy. The office re-grounded itself in its core purpose, articulated a specific vision of what the culture needs to be to achieve that purpose, and launched a journey of learnings and transformation.

This session will outline the latest tax developments and planning opportunities for 2018 and beyond. Our expert speakers will comment on recent tax law changes at the time of the session and outline practical strategies for making the most of the current tax climate.  Topics were identified from a subgroup of Council members so the session covers provisions that are related to all of you.

Tax Reform

Facilitated by Mariann Mihailidis, Family Office Exchange

Now that everyone has had time to digest the new tax bill and heard from the experts, we will have an interactive discussion with your peers to share creative planning ideas you are considering or have completed under the new bill.  Consider:

  • How are other FO’s dealing with the lost deduction for investment management fees?
  • Are FO’s considering a conversion to a C-Corp to take advantage of the reduced Corp tax rates?
  • Increase in the exemption level
  • Impact on passthrough loss limitation rules to family offices structured as a pass through
  • Deductibility of trust expenses under the new law (i.e. trustee fees, accounting fees, taxes, etc.)
  • Meals and Entertainment expenses under the new law
  • Key planning points/ideas for wealthy individuals and trusts that have historically been AMT taxpayers
  • Impact on NII of elimination of investment expense deductions
  • Other Topics
