There have been a number of significant rulings in the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Supreme Court this year regarding charitable contributions, the Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (“FBAR”) as well as Form 5471 – Information Return of the U.S. Persons with Respect to Certain Foreign Corporations. 

In this FOX webcast, specialists from BDO’s National Tax Office will discuss the implication of these cases on family offices and ultra-high net worth individuals in addition to reviewing some of the other issues they commonly see when supporting such clients through challenging periods, including:

Todd C. Simmens
National Managing Partner of Tax Risk Management, BDO

Todd is BDO’s National Managing Partner of Tax Risk Management. As the Tax Risk 
Management Partner, he is responsible for managing tax risk issues for the firm, 
including tax return preparer issues, client-related practice issues, and reportable 
transaction consulting. In addition, Todd oversees the tax practice’s Tax Controversy & Procedure practice, managing tax controversies and addressing questions of tax procedure. Todd also serves as the leader of our Tax Policy and Legislation practice, advising clients of the potential for legislative activity and the impact of changes in tax law.

Prior to joining BDO, Todd was a member of the Tax Controversy & Risk Management Services practice of Ernst & Young, LLP. He also practiced law at White & Case LLP, where he assisted in the writing and production of Michael I. Saltzman’s IRS Practice and Procedure (Revised Second Edition).

Additionally, Todd served as legislation counsel to the U.S. Congress Joint Committee on Taxation, as an associate with Blank Rome LLP, and as law clerk to U.S. Tax Court Judge Joel Gerber.

Todd is the co-author of Tax Management Portfolio (BNA) No.648 – 2nd, Reportable Transactions.
 

John M. Nuckolls
Tax Senior Director, BDO

Jack is the technical National Group Leader of the U.S. BDO Private Client Tax Services practice. Jack has more than 30 years of professional experience serving high net worth individuals, executives, closely held business owners, trusts, and estates with respect to income, estate, gift and generation skipping tax planning and compliance issues. Jack is also the U.S. representative of the BDO International Private Client Services Center of Excellence responsible for providing tax planning advice on a world-wide basis. 
 

Rosy L. Lor
Managing Director, BDO Private Client Services

Rosy is a managing director in the U.S. BDO Private Client Services National Tax Office and co-leads the firm’s Private Client Services International Tax Committee. She focuses on cross-border tax matters affecting high net worth individuals. Her areas of expertise include pre-immigration and expatriation tax planning, cross-border estate and gift tax matters, foreign trusts, tax treaties and other international agreements, and tax controversy.

Prior to joining BDO, she worked on cross-border private client tax matters at a Big 4 accounting firm and spent over 13 years with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, where she last served as a Senior Technical Reviewer in the IRS Office of Associate Chief Counsel (International).
 

Rachel E. Caviness
National Relationship Director, Private Client & Family Office Services, BDO

Rachel has 20 years of professional services industry experience in a wide variety of 
fields, including public accounting, finance and accounting executive recruitment, ERP systems implementation and project management. 

Rachel started her career with a Big Four firm in litigation support and corporate value consulting services. After years of success as an executive finance recruiter, she started her own consulting firm which she later sold. Prior to joining BDO, she served as a Vice President for a national technology implementation services firm. 

Having been a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), trained in the Miller Heiman complex sales methodology, and completed the Prosci Organizational Change Management curriculum, Rachel is able to address BDO’s client’s needs with a very disciplined approach to problem solving and a very personal approach to client service.

She combines her technical knowledge, critical analysis, and global perspective to connect our clients with the right BDO expert, regardless of where they are located in any of BDO’s 1,600 offices across 167 countries and territories.
